It’s All About Choice
“I’M THE CHOSEN ONE.” Donald J. Trump, President of the United States, declared on Thursday. “Somebody had to do it,” Our Fearless Leader said, referring to his decision to “take on China.” He turned his head, looked to heaven, and said, “I’m the Chosen One.”
THE CHOSEN ONE has decided Jewish-Americans don’t have a right to choose. When asked by a reporter today about whether his claim that Jews who choose to vote for Democrats are disloyal is anti-Semitic, he responded, “only in your head.” A number of Jewish organizations claim the trope of Jews having split loyalty is historically anti-Semitic. Guess THE CHOSEN ONE forgot to check with chief Jewish adviser, Son-in-Law Jared Kushner.
Not to worry! Spin Doctor extraordinaire, Madame Alternative Facts Conway will do the math. “The President recognizes the imbalance in Congress.” She knows only two of the twenty-seven Jewish representatives and none of the eight Jewish senators are Republicans. “If he can persuade their Jewish constituency to switch their loyalty, we can win back the House. Now, I don’t see where that can be construed as anti-Semitic.”
Here’s the thing. The Constitution of the United States gives every person, no matter what religious beliefs she or he holds, freedom of choice. Using the power of the office to persuade that choice has existed since the founding of the republic. However, THE CHOSEN ONE has chosen to sink to a new low with words like “disloyal” “weak” and “unwise” to describe Jews who vote for Democrats.
What he has forgotten is we are THE CHOSEN PEOPLE. I remember my parents telling me before I started school that we were part of the chosen people. It had to be true because the guy playing Moses in The Ten Commandments was the head of the NRA. (All right, so Charlton Heston didn’t become NRA president until years later, but it’s still a fact–not alternative, just delayed.) In that classic film, all my non-Jewish friends saw God give Moses and the Jews the Ten Commandments. We were CHOSEN!!!
Of course being kids, my friends had to come up with a fitting response. A few days later, one of them said he was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, and because he chose to accept Jesus as his Savior he was going to heaven, and I was not. When I asked my parents if I could choose Jesus, they said no. But having been kids, they said I should tell my friends that the Jewish people are waiting for the Real Messiah. I wonder if THE CHOSEN ONE has tried to convince Jared and Ivanka he’s the Real Messiah.
One last thing. I make my strong, wise, loyal choice based on the facts as I see them, not as THE CHOSEN ONE, or any other politician, reporter, celebrity or whatever claims is right. It is my choice and not his!
