How to be an Author: KEEP GOING

One thing every writer does on a daily basis is write and read. We write because we were born to write. Yes, we’re compelled to do it. It’s innate, like Springsteen’s rebel who was Born to Run. There’s no getting away from it. When a writer is not writing he, she, or whatever gender identification or non-identification thinks about writing. Almost all writers reflect elements, styles, techniques, characteristics, attributes, permutations and imitations garnered from other writers. While a conscious effort may arise as a way of expressing appreciation or admiration for a certain writer, more often any similarities come from the subconscious mind. This occurs because, like the audience for whom they write, writers are also readers.

I am currently reading a young adult novel, A Lite Too Bright by Samuel Miller. The book jacket claims Mr. Miller was on tour in a 15-passenger van with his band Paradise Fears https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdKu_J5ebMg&list=RDKdKu_J5ebMg&index=4 when he began writing this 2018 debut novel. His photograph made me assume the author, who is also the front man for the band, and according to his bio is attending graduate school at USC, is about the age of my youngest daughter.

In the novel, eighteen-year-old Arthur, who suffers from hallucinations and emotional stability issues, goes on a road-trip to discover the truth about his grandfather, who died five years earlier. The only things he remembers about him is his anger and memory lapses due to Alzheimer’s disease and he had written a best selling book before Arthur was born, which Arthur found boring. But there was one message the grandfather left for Arthur to find that moves him through a number of cities and a diverse cast of characters. The message is one all writers live by: Keep Going!

Apparently, he follows his own advice, because his second novel, Redemption Prep is due out April 14.

Please leave me a comment. I love to hear from readers, even if they’re not writers. They help me Keep Going!

I am a writer, husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, retired teacher, homeowner, taxpayer and citizen. A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, I earned my PhD in Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. My dream is to be the kind of author whose work you enjoy so much you have difficulty waiting for the next book to arrive.
